Great read

Great story about Virgil & Ruby Mae finally getting the chance to make each other happy. The two have been married to other people but have never forgotten about each other. Will Virgil be able to fix things in his hometown and his relationship with the woman he loves? Will he ever have a chance to be honest with his father? Can his mother ever be a mother to him? There are so many great people and friendships in this book and many nasty evil people too. Can't wait to see where the other goes next...Billy's story I hope.

Title shows an interesting play on words

Family names aside, this was a cute book. Entertaining read... it made me smile while I was reading it ... I do have to say that I tend to skim past the sex scenes as after awhile most of the authors write them in the same way, but the story itself was good. After all, who doesn't like a happy ending?

Ms. Wylde has done it yet again. Her characters? Well you just want to be part of the family. Some you just want to give a good shake too ( Virgil) . You want to cry with Ruby May. Your heart breaks with Brandon. You laugh out loud and you cry inside. In my opinion that is a great book.

The 411 please!

I am not one to review products I haven't bought, but as a huge fan of Old Time Radio, the product description for "The Best of Mercury Theater with Orson Welles" annoyed me so much I just had to weigh in a bit, if only in the hopes the manufacturer will read this and add some information. Seriously, if you are going to ask fifty bucks for a collection of old-time radio shows, is it too much to ask that you list the shows on your product advertisement?

The product advert says: "The Best of the Mercury Theater, with Orson Welles 12-CD set, 12 Episodes Running Time: 12 Hours 12 of the best episodes from the original broadcasts of the Mercury Theater, featuring Orson Welles. Includes the original broadcast of "War of the Worlds." 12-CDs, digitally remastered (NOT low-quality MP3s)." Well and good, but what about the OTHER eleven shows? What are they? The Mercury Theater produced a pretty hefty number of radio plays, at least 29 of which have survived. They include some really good stuff, such as "A Passenger To Bali", "Julius Caesar", "Life With Father", "Dracula", and "The Count of Monte Cristo." The selling point of a collection like this is presumably the sound quality (digital remastering to partially compensate for the low-fidelity recordings), but when you can get a lot of old-time radio free on the Net, it helps to tell the customer not only how good the quality is but WHAT they are getting.

I'd like to add in closing that I ran a search and went to about a dozen or more sites trying to get a proper product description, and came up with a big donut hole for my efforts. Near as I can figure there is not a single review or itemized list of this anywhere on the Net, probably because nobody wants to "buy blind" when the price-tag is so high. So how about making one? It will only help your cause!

Sons and Lovers (second time roung)

I first read this book as a teenager in the 1960s. The second time round I enjoyed it immensely as It is really an adult book. Lawrence writes beautifully and I enjoyed his appreciation of flowers and other vegetation.

The characters left me in two minds. I disliked the mother. She was emotionally possessive and I think this is why the son, Paul, was such a tortured soul unable to form proper relationships with his lovers. I was uncertain about him - sorry for his shortcomings and yet contemptuous of his inability to break his mother's hold. I felt the father was badly treated by the family who were inspired by the mother. Yes, he was weak, but his children led by the mother showed him no empathy or respect.

The book moves slowly, but this is not a detraction. It is calm and very true to life. It is a bit dated and definitely not for everyone in our fast moving life. There are, however, lessons to be learnt. It is a classic and I am really glad I have re-read it.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in the development of twentieth century English Lit. Uses many antiquated words which makes it valuable to students desiring to build their word power. It's like serious classical music - not for everyone, but expresses the human condition in a deep and meaningful way.

this is the second story I've read in this series and it has stopped me from reading any more of these "recommendations". Most of it seems to be the product of "writers" who teach MFA programs and explaines why MFA programs produce more teachers than successful writers. Don't waste you time or money on any of these.

He is accused of terrible crimes which he doesn't remember. It's a tough one. Read and see what you think.

Wonderful Sequel; Can't wait for #3

The sequel to Land is great! I purchased it yesterday and finished it this morning at 4 am. I have been waiting, checking Amazon almost daily for Sea. The wait was definitely worth it. I won't reveal any spoilers. You just have to read it for yourself to find out what happens. I am an avid fan of post-apocalyptic stories, and try to read everything I can. The refreshing thing about Theresa Shaver's books are that they are told from the point of view of teenagers, so there isn't a lot of graphic violence and language. The premise of an EMP stranding a class of Canadian teens in California, then they split up into 3 groups to try to get home is a new one. I can't wait to see what happens to the group that stayed in California. Thank you, Theresa, for an entertaining piece of work. Now I get to wait for the next one...

I am perplexed as to why the author, Theresa Shaver, did not enjoy this book and wanted to push through it to get to her final book. Perhaps I just enjoy stories of the sea, but I thought this was a great read with interesting characters. Although the story was great, this work could stand to be edited for typos and grammatical errors.

The story was good...

but I think the characters were kinda transparent and stereotypical. For example, Lisa, I liked how she goes from being the stupid preppy teenaged girl to someone with a brain, but the back story of her cold parents was more obvious than subtle. I got a bit bored reading the back stories because of how predictable they were, and I think it would have been nice to see the characters coming to a realization about their home life and drawing conclusions that weren't laid out neatly for them to grasp. I think a greater or deeper struggle with their pasts and emotional difficulties would have been welcome. Also, I thought some of the character's feelings were overstated. There would be a scene where you could feel the character's sadness or frustrations and then there would be a simple sentence stating what the character was thinking/feeling which would completely break the mood for me.
