instant classic sci fi novella

Although Mike Resnick considers himself a novelist, according to his Amazon page, his short science fiction has won more awards than than that of any other living author. I kind of have to agree with the award givers, since I've always enjoyed Resnick's short fiction more than his longer works; but then, I've always been a short story fan. This story, though a bit predictable, is well written and paced, and calls to mind the best classic end-of-the-world-as we-know-it scifi. If you're not long on short fiction, you should still try this piece. It might make you change your mind. Too easy, too facile

This is one of those novellas that sounds great on paper. The hook is the use of artifacts to examine humanity's evolution to, and subsequent fall from, galactic domination. So you get artifacts from different periods and tell a brief story about how each one, and the stories together paint a picture of man's strengths and weaknesses.

Usually I'm in agreement with the Hugo and Nebula awards. But not in this case. I found Seven Views to be contrived, empty, and just not that interesting. The aliens aren't that alien -- their interactions and limited story conflicts with their purported surprise and shock and humanity's habits. The individual stories about artifacts are hit miss, but most are leaden morality tales and by-the-book allegory.

I really like Mike Resnick, and I'll continue reading his work. But this is one I could have done without.

As a HUGE Fan of Resnick....

....I can promise that you will not be disappointed!

This is a novella really, not a full novel...you're looking at 45 pages here. Set in the "Birthright Universe", this story revolves around a group of alien "archaeologists" who come to Earth to try to under the Race of Man a bit better. One of the team members has the ability to "relive" portions of lives of the people who owned various relics that these archaeologists have dug up at Olduvai Gorge, and the remember of these bits of history is the bulk of the novella.

It's a superb romp from the earliest artifacts (in which a group of aliens wonder about these weird hairless monkeys running around) to the last (which I can't reveal without spoilers). Resnick is at his full stride in this book, and it's easy to see why he continues to revisit the Birthright Universe--there's just so MUCH story there to be told!

HIGHLY recommended for Resnick fans, science fiction fans, and anybody who just plains likes a good *story*.

Neil Hunter is a pseudonym of the prolific Lancashire-born writer Michael R. Linaker. As Neil Hunter, Mike wrote two classic western series, BODIE THE STALKER and JASON BRAND. Under the name Richard Wyler he produced four stand-alone westerns, INCIDENT AT BUTLER’S STATION, THE SAVAGE JOURNEY, BRIGHAM’S WAY and TRAVIS. Another western, HIGH KILL, was later published in the SUNDANCE series as BOUNTY KILLER. His western output can also be found under the names ‘Dan Stewart’, ‘John C. Danner’ and ‘Frederick H. Christian’, the latter name employed when he ghost-wrote an additional five titles in Frederick Nolan’s popular FRANK ANGEL series. Mike has written three ‘nasty’ horror novels under his own name, but since the late 1980s has become best-known as one of the most popular contributors to Gold Eagle’s MACK BOLAN series, chronicling the adventures of PHOENIX FORCE, THE EXECUTIONER and STONY MAN, as well as his own action-adventure series, CADE.

Bodie is like a freight train on steroids!

While this book might be a little shorter than some, it makes up for it with non-stop action. Bodie is a character that runs towards a problem instead of running away from it. He sometimes has a harsh way of doing things, but he always gets the job done!

I have read several "Bodies", the stories are good. But not for the squeamish or nonviolent reader. A Bodie book can be graphic
with the discriptions of the actions taking place.

The obligatory anti-climax

I would describe myself as a fan of Kikuchi, possibly even as more of a fan of his works derived from Demon City Shinjuku than the Vampire Hunter D series, but dubiously translated afterwords aside I have no idea what he was thinking letting the Yashakiden (sub)series get so out of hand, and I fail to see even glimpses of anything that could make me agree with his assessment that the work is his magnum opus.

I purchased and read all 5/8 volumes (just in case you don't know the deal, this was originally published as eight "light" novels in Japan, but was thankfully released in only five installments here in the west) of this series as they became available, but having not bothered to review them at the time I feel compelled to offer this three star rating as my assessment of the entire series even though this particular volume doesn't even warrant a single star.

I'll begin with the translation since it's a joke that gets worse with every volume of Kikuchi's that Eugene Woodbury translates. I didn't think things could get worse than the incoherent debacle that was the Demon City Shinjuku/Demon Palace Babylon omnibus, but the volumes of Yashakiden he worked on after that proved me woefully wrong. I'm not going to pretend like Kikuchi is the easiest Japanese author to translate into American English (note for instance the extremely low correspondence between how many entries for Kikuchi's works and characters there are on the English Wikipedia compared to the Japanese one), or at that rate that the hijinx inherent to colloquial Japanese translates even remotely naturally to vernacular English of ANY kind, but one doesn't even need to look outside of DMP's own projects for an example of a translator that's done a MUCH better job handling Kikuchi (Kevin Leahy, who's done all of Vampire Hunter D) than Woodbury did.

To be fair, even though every other translator of Kikuchi's has seemingly done a better job than Woodbury (Mini Eda's work on Dark Wars stands out to me since its original Japanese version must have started out as at least as much of a linguistic quagmire as the Yashakiden novels) I place the blame for the final product solely upon DMP. Even on the off chance that there weren't other editors in charge of polishing up Woodbury's rough output (no other names were listed in this volume as far as I could see but its schizophrenic nature indicates a team of them overseen by an incompetent publisher to me), there sure as heck should have been.

Seriously, if Dark Horse (jointly involved in the D series, also published a wind named amnesia and invader summer which credits two translators), Del Rey (Dark Wars), and even Seven Seas (Wicked City, and whose crediting of both an English translator and an English adapter goes further to proving the point I'm trying to make than this paragraph ever could) can all find solutions to the problems that Kikuchi's works present there's simply no excusing DMP.

Another complaint I have about DMP's localization is their choice and omission of certain covers. This is also a problem with the D novels to some extent and undoubtedly stems largely from the sometimes bizarre licensing arrangements Japanese publishers talk American companies into, but there's simply no excuse for having a random looking picture of Yakou of all people on the cover of the final volume!

With the scapegoat translator and clownish publisher out of the way, I can't neglect to deliver the most damning criticism of all to Kikuchi Hideyuki himself since everything stems from the fact that he wrote this garbage in the first place: The ending he claims to have "mapped out" years before actually being able to place it at the end of the 8th and final volume was (along with just about everything else that occurred in it) so arbitrary that it not only belonged in the first or second volume, he completely invalidated all the time that he and his loyal readers spent on this series after them.

Heh. Actually that doesn't strike me as being such a damning criticism after all so let's try putting it another way. The English edition of Yashakiden amounts to little more than a single book's worth of content that somehow got split between five of them, so unless you relish wasting your time (which I suppose you might if you actually bothered to read my equally loquacious review) I advise steering clear of the whole stinking mess.

Shaw could've done this much simpler and much better, in my opinion

This play is overrated and too long. I understand the English have a history of long, philosophical Theatre, but this is just too much. Shaw could've done this much simpler and much better, in my opinion, by not trying to write a sweeping epic that falls flat before Act II.

Pure Bergsonism

George Bernard Shaw was called, with good reason, the "English Nietzsche". Though Nietzsche was an aristocrat and Shaw a socialist, both cherished the dream of the superman and looked forward to the day when he would be realised. Both, however, were characterised by their mordant wit and intellectual cynicism, in which "Man and Superman" abounds. Shaw manages to compress a number of disparate themes into a relatively taut dramatic format, even throwing in a scene in which Don Juan, the Devil and a gang of anarchist brigands make an appearance. The central event of the plot involves the wealthy Tanner, a member of the "Idle Rich Class" making himself subservient to the Life Force and seeking the perfect woman to marry, who would guarantee him a very special offspring, his ideal, the superman himself. Though Shaw was not known to have read the works of Bergson at that time, nor to have been conversant with his vitalist doctrine of the Life Force, his use of the Life Force motif and the philosophical underpinnings of the play attest to a pure Bergsonism. The most delightful part, however, is the "Revolutionist's Handbook" at the end, which contains Shaw's most scandalous anti-Establishment jibes. For instance, "Do not do unto others as you would them do unto you. They might not have the same taste."

Shaw has packed many high-level topics into this play, while at the same time keeping long portions of the dialogue fairly low-level. Two topics jump out most frequently: hell and enjoyment. His take on each respective topic is fresh, seemingly from an entirely new perspective.

In the third act, the characters' conversation stands out in a couple ways. The explanation of hell from Don Juan, the Statue, and The Devil's point of view is unique. From a Judeo-Christian standpoint, it reeks of blasphemy, twisting around the traditional views to show things as they really are: The devil finally gets to tell his side of the story; heaven is boring; anyone can go between the two afterlives whenever they please. What is interesting is that Shaw's hell can fit with the Judeo-Christian/Biblical facts, something that the blasphemy police certainly will not give any credence to or spend any time investigating. His idea that heaven and hell are created for those who are going there matches perfectly with Biblical theology. A person not living in the grace of Jesus would hate heaven just as much as a person living in his grace would hate hell. Biblical theologians would not agree (if one could get them to listen) that people can choose their own eternity, nor would they agree with the concept of non-believers enjoying themselves in hell, even if one could get them to voice their belief that they will be given over to all the desires of their flesh.

What is fascinating about Shaw's hell is just that idea - that if life is about your passions and enjoyment (namely, the flesh) then your afterlife will be personal to those same passions and enjoyment. At this point, the conservative Judeo-Christians would be sharpening their inquisition equipment in a fervent rage because much of the play speaks to that idea of personal enjoyment during life, specifically the English. Don Juan says that humans live to try to understand life more but later adds to that idea by saying that understanding only helps us to know that we are enjoying ourselves. Life then becomes the pursuit of enjoyment, and hell mimics that pursuit as a sort of eternal amusement park. In a statement that seems like a pre-response to his opponent's case, Don Juan then says that although he spent his whole life looking for pleasure, he never found it. If it could ever happen, it is that response which could appease the frantic theologians. The devil, being the father of lies has pulled the eternal wool over everyone's eyes, both the living and the dead, and has gotten them to abandon their real purpose.

Shaw's flirtation with both sides of the controversy is what allows this play such success. He angers both the proponents and opponents of Christian "myths" and then offers possible solutions to appease both sides.

Melissa McPhail is a classically trained pianist, violinist and composer, a Vinyasa yoga instructor, and an avid fantasy reader. A long-time student of philosophy, she is passionate about the fantasy genre because of its inherent philosophical explorations. Good, but not great, follow up

Overall, this is still an excellent first set of books for a new writer. Having said that, I admit I was hoping the writer might improve on her work a little with the second book, as the first book seemed to get a little better as it went along.

I was pleased she did away with the jarring flashbacks from the first book, but here she erred with some of her characters in that they behaved in ways that did not ring true to what the reader had come to expect of them. It's kind of a classic error, the sudden "misunderstanding" from a character who previously has been very thoughtful and discerning, but now jumps to conclusions based on a snippet of an overheard conversation. This is not a fatal flaw for the book, but enough to drop it down a star IMO.

Overall, I'm still interested in the characters and the plot, and very much want to find out where they end up. I look forward to the next book (hope it takes less than 2 years to get published!). I encourage the author to please keep writing, as even if she doesn't drastically improve, she has written stories that are still entertaining and worth the read.

Couldn't Wait to Put It Down

Having read the first book, Cephrael's Hand, I was somewhat reluctant to start Dagger of Adendigaeth. However, curiosity (and a relatively low price) won out, and I went ahead and made the purchase. Unfortunately, the problems of the first book (ludicrously long names, deus ex machina solutions, confusingly inconsistent villains, etc.) were amplified.

One character (albeit a "throwaway" guy we don't really care about very much) does actually die; other than that, the main characters seem to go through all their trials and tribulations without any lasting damage. The "plot twist" was telegraphed about as loudly as the one from the first book. All this, combined with the frequent typos and grammatical errors, made Dagger a real challenge to finish.

Which is a shame, because it could've been really good.

Holy Cliff hanger Batman!

This book kept me up late into the night, and that's a good thing! For those lovers of epic fantasy, this series is a must read. Now begins the long wait for for book 3. Maybe I'll read book one again. Yeah it was that good.
