"Everyone down! Any quick moves and we'll shoot. Understand?"

Elle Philips dropped onto the marble floor of the bank. The contents of her purse scattered everywhere as she hit the ground, but she didn't care. She remained frozen, not wanting to draw attention to herself.

At the sound of approaching footsteps, her heart rate quickened. She raised her head, just enough to take a quick inventory of the situation. Two men. Black masks. Guns.

Elle knew that only two tellers were working right now, and that the manager had just left for a late lunch—Elle had passed him on her way in. Three other customers had also sunk to the floor. A frail-looking older woman, a college-aged girl and Denton. The dark-haired man had been in line behind her today. She knew Denton's name, only because they often came to the bank on the same days, same times. Over the weeks, they'd been flirtatious as they passed time in line.

Today, they'd only begun their casual teasing of each other when the robbers had burst through the doors of StoneCrest Bank on General Booth Blvd. in Virginia Beach, Virginia. At the moment, Elle glanced at Denton. He sat only a few feet away. His perceptive eyes met hers, silently communicating the urgency of the situation. Something about his calm gaze made her racing heart slow for a moment.

The shorter of the two robbers locked the glass doors at the front of the bank. He then stepped between the customers, the barrel of his gun bouncing against his black pants. The second robber, the one who'd ordered everyone to the ground, rushed toward the tellers, a bag in hand. "If you do what we say, no one will get hurt."

The first robber—Shortie, Elle nicknamed him—kicked Elle's purse back to her, sending more lipstick and pens rolling everywhere. "Give me your cell phones. If anyone even tries to call the police, I'll…I'll kill you."

A shudder ripped down Elle's spine, and her hands trembled as she riffled through her purse. Most of the contents lay askew, but her cell phone remained lodged in one of the deep pockets, refusing to budge. The device seemed to hang on tighter as Shortie loomed over her.

"Come on, lady!"

Finally, she jerked the phone from its hideout. Its metal burned in her hands, reminding her that this was her lifeline to the outside world. If only she could call the police…

No, let them get their money and get out of here, she told herself. Be compliant. That's what security experts always said. If only she weren't so bad at embracing compliance. Still, she was levelheaded enough to know when to back off.

She shoved her phone into Shortie's gloved hand. He grunted as he snatched it from her. Once all the phones were collected in a black bag, the man laid them on the counter at the center of the bank.

Julie, the young teller behind the counter, raised her hands in the air. Her eyes stretched wide with fear. "Whatever you want. Just don't hurt anyone."

The other robber, the ringleader, Elle thought, shoved his gun at the teller. "I want all of the money in your drawer. If the police show up right now, you'll be the first one I take out."

Just do what they say, Elle prayed. Then maybe they would leave. The police could come and get some fingerprints and take eyewitness accounts. The justice system would be the heroes when they tracked down the robbers. Elle prayed that no one would try to be heroic and end up making the situation worse for all of them.

"What are you doing?" Ringleader shouted at Julie.

Elle wanted nothing more than to lay a steady hand on the young woman's shoulder and encourage her to just do what the man said. Instead, Elle hunkered down on the cool floor, her back against the wall. The best thing she could do would be to remain quiet and unseen.

Shortie paced over to her, his job obviously to guard the customers as Ringleader grabbed the money.

Elle tried to remember each detail so she could tell the police when they arrived. She soaked in the robbers' demeanors, their clipped words, the color of their eyes. As a campaign manager for her father's senate reelection bid, she was paid to pay attention to details. Shortie's gaze darted toward Elle, and she sucked in a breath, waiting to see what he would do.

Don't make this any worse than it has to be, buddy.

He waved his gun at her, and Elle noticed his hand trembling. The man was a novice at this. Was that a good or bad thing? The other man, Ringleader, didn't seem nervous at all.

"I need more money than that. Open the other drawers!" Ringleader leaned toward Julie, his gun aimed at her temple.

Julie shook her head, tears glimmering in her eyes. "I can't. I don't have their keys!"

"What do you mean, you don't have their keys? Can't you get them?"

"Only the branch manager has access to all the keys. You have to have them to open the drawers." Tears glistened in her eyes.

"You're messing with me! Just get the keys, give me the money and nobody gets hurt."

Denton's strong, steady voice broke through the mayhem. "Can I see if I can help her?"

Shortie pointed his gun at him. "You know something about banks?"

Denton raised his hands. "No, but I want to help. You're making her nervous. Maybe I can help her open the drawer."

The gun trembled in Shortie's hands. "I want you to stay right where you are."

"I just don't want anyone to get hurt." Denton's gaze remained level and even.

Elle had to admire Denton's calm demeanor. She glanced at him again, at the chisel of his features, at the dark hair that formed the shadow of a beard across his face. Dark, thick hair. Tall, broad form. Put it all together, and he was the picture-perfect definition of a heartbreaker.

Elle noted that Denton wasn't wearing his customary suit and tie today. Instead, he'd donned a black jacket over a T-shirt and jeans. In all of their casual conversation, Elle had never thought to ask him what he did for a living. Perhaps he was in law enforcement of some sort? How else could he be so calm in this situation?

Ringleader pointed his gun at the other teller. "Put your money in now!" The teller filled his bag, but then he turned his attention back to Julie. "Figure out how I can get more money." He reached over and grabbed Elle's arm, pulling her to her feet. The gun went to her head. "Do it now or she dies."

Elle gasped and trembles overtook her.

"Calm down," Denton said. He still leaned against the wall, his knees propped up, his voice and movement as calm and controlled as if he were merely talking everyone else through a training exercise. "Let her go."

Ringleader paced over to him, Elle in tow. "Are you in charge here? I didn't think so. You're going to be next if you don't keep your mouth shut."

Elle's throat burned. She was acutely aware of the gun at her temple. One accidental jerk of the finger and she'd be dead, just like that.

There was so much she still wanted to do, needed to do. Life came into an odd and complete clarity when the end appeared close enough to touch. Her necklace, the one her grandmother gave her before she passed, seemed to sear into her skin at the moment. It reminded her that she'd made a promise to her grandmother that she still needed to fulfill.

"I'm telling you—I can't get into the other drawers or the vault. They're all locked, and I don't have the keys. The manager's out to lunch." Sweat glistened across Julie's forehead.

Something hard hit Elle in the face. She blanched before sinking to her knees. The robber quickly pulled her right back up. Her legs would hardly hold her. It didn't matter. Ringleader held her up by her coat collar.

Her cheek throbbed from where the man had pistol-whipped her. Tears rushed to her eyes as pain continued to send shocks through her.

"That's only the start of what's going to happen if you don't get me more money." The man's hot breath hit her cheek, along with a splattering of spittle.

"Boss, you said no one would get hurt," Shortie said.

"I've got this. You shut your mouth and keep the crowd under control."

"Let me—let me…let me search my manager's desk, see if I can find any keys," the second teller said.

Ringleader pushed Elle back to the ground. She stumbled until she hit the wall and sank to the floor. Her hand went to her cheek, and she felt moisture there. Blood? Tears? Both?

Denton looked over at her, his eyes full of concern. "Are you okay?" he mouthed.

She nodded, grateful to be alive. But how much longer would that be the case? The robbers were obviously losing it, getting out of control. This whole situation could spiral into something much bigger than even they had planned.

"Thank you," she whispered back.

The men were pacing now, as if trying to figure out what to do next.

"Good gravy, you didn't know the manager was gone for lunch?" Ringleader let out an expletive and stared at his partner in crime.

"He usually goes earlier."

"Usually isn't good enough." He turned back to Julie. "You need to figure out a plan B."

"Me? Me? How am I supposed to figure out a plan B?" Panic claimed her voice, her limbs.

"You have to know another way to get into that vault."

Julie's head swung back and forth. "Not without a key and a code."

Ringleader cocked the gun at her. "Think a little harder."

She half moaned, half screamed. "I've been trying. I have. There's nothing I can do!"

The gun fired. Elle screamed as Julie disappeared from sight, sinking below the counter.

Denton jumped to his feet. Elle slapped her hand over her mouth, disbelief filling her.

Julie. The robber had just shot Julie.

She lifted a prayer as tears rushed to h...

Well written!
By Anne Baxter Campbell
If you enjoy romantic suspense, this book is well written and well worth your time to read. Key Witness is the first of Christy Barritt's Security Experts series with Harlequin's Love Inspired Suspense.

Elle Phillips watches in horror as a bank robbery becomes an apparently senseless murder case as well. Her quick thinking in using the robber's cell phone brings the police, but it also seems to make her the target of further incidences.

Her wealthy father, Senator Phillips, hires another witness to the robbery/murder to safeguard his precious daughter, Mark Denton, a security expert.

Sparks fly--between Mark and Elle, that is. Suspicions and deadly encounters abound.

Perfect balance between suspense & romance - you won't be able to put it down!
By Emilie Hendryx
When I received this book, I was excited to start it and, once I had, it was extremely difficult to put down!

Following footsteps of Elle Philips, a politicians daughter and campaign manager, we she her first real interaction with Mark Denton in the worst-case scenario possible, a bank robbery. When Denton is hired to protect Elle, the two are thrown into one dire circumstance after another. This time together with Denton is exactly what Elle is not looking for - close proximity with a handsome man.

Get ready for an action packed, adrenaline laced ride with Elle and Denton! No only will you be kept guessing until the end, you will also find yourself drawn to the complex characters Christy has created in Elle and Denton. They come alive and their story will compel you just as the robbers plot will keep you guessing to the very end.

It's not very often that you can find a book that keeps surprising you, but Key Witness is that book! You won't be able to put this down and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspense laced with sweet romance.

Key Witness--Great Read
By Susan Simpson
Key Witness by Christy Barritt is truly a page turner. The reader is thrown into the action from the very first line when Elle Philips finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her innocent trip to the bank turns her from customer to witness of an armed robbery. One horrifying event follows another, and Elle finds herself the target of revenge. Former Navy SEAL bodyguard, Mark Denton, makes it his mission to keep Elle safe and loses his heart in the process.

Who are the perpetrators of so much evil? Why is Elle their target? Can Denton keep Elle safe? Will Elle and Denton be able to trust and give their hearts to each other?

Reading Key Witness is genuinely a nail-biting, heart-pounding experience that will keep the reader hyperventilating until the last page. Five stars, Christy. You've done it again!!

Who am I?

She bent over the bathroom sink in her hospital room, cupped her hands and splashed some cold water on her face. As though that would suddenly make her remember who she was. She studied herself in the mirror and didn't recognize the person looking back at her. That revelation only intensified the panic she'd been struggling with ever since she woke up from a coma yesterday. Her fingers clenched the countertop.

Earlier, the nurse had brought her a few toiletries since she didn't have any. After brushing her hair and putting it into a ponytail, she stared at the red gash, recently healed, above her eyebrow. She closed her eyes and tried to recall how it had happened. The screech of tires echoed through her mind. The sensation of gripping a steering wheel made her hands ache. She looked down at them, her knuckles white.

A car wreck?

A sound coming from the other room invaded the quiet. The sudden intrusion kicked up her heartbeat. She moved toward the door, putting her hand around the knob. But when two deep male voices drifted to her, she stopped and pressed her ear against the wood to listen.

"Where is she?"

"Who?"

"The patient who belongs in this room."

"I don't know. I'm here to clean her room. She wasn't in here when I arrived."

The sound of the two men talking about her sent her pulse racing even more. Why? It seemed innocent enough. But she couldn't calm the pounding against her chest. Her breathing shortened. One of the voices was familiar. But how could that be? The only interactions she'd had since she'd regained consciousness were with women. She eased the door open an inch and had a pencil-narrow view into the room.

"I can come back another time. You'll have to ask the nurse where the patient is." The guy who was there to clean her room shifted back and forth while holding a plastic bag in one hand and a dry mop in the other.

The other man, just out of sight to the left, said, "I will." That was the voice she'd heard somewhere before this. She wished she could see him.

Instead, she examined the features of the custodian with a beard and dark-slashing eyebrows over a piercing gray gaze. Although he was a complete stranger there was something about his frosty eyes that scared her. She eased the door shut and leaned against it.

Fear from somewhere deep inside her swelled to the surface. She couldn't get a decent breath. She tried to search her mind for any clue to who she was, to the man with the familiar-sounding voice. A voice with a rough edge to it.

But what bothered her the most were the custodian's gray eyes. Why? Did she know him? Someone from her past? Then why couldn't she muster the strength to go out there and demand to know who she was?

Of course that conundrum led to lots of other baffling questions.

Like…how did she end up in the hospital?

And were the police interested in her? The nurse last night had told her they would be glad she had awakened, that they needed to talk to her. Why? She knew nothing. At all. Her mind was a blank.

A suffocating pressure in her chest made it difficult to breathe. A sense of danger pressed in on her. According to Nurse Gail, the police had found her in the Lost Woods several weeks ago. She'd been hurt and disoriented. After she was brought here to the hospital she'd slipped into a coma from a head injury. No one knew how she'd received that wound.

But why hadn't anyone reported her missing? Come forward to identify her?

Tears flooded her eyes. She squeezed them shut, refusing to give in to crying. From somewhere she sensed she'd given up doing that a long time ago.

A knock at the bathroom door caught her by surprise. She gasped, then went still, hoping the person went away.

"Are you all right in there?"

She stiffened at the sound of that familiar voice. Words jammed her throat.

"Ma'am? Are you okay? Should I call the nurse?"

"Who are you?" she finally managed to ask, her voice wobbly.

"I'm Lee Calloway with the K-9 Unit of the Sagebrush Police Department." Something in his tone conveyed a concern, urging her to leave the relative safety of the bathroom. Was he the cop who found her? Was that why he sounded familiar to her?

Laying her trembling hand on the knob, she turned it and opened the door a few inches. "Sagebrush? Where is that?" The large muscular man, resplendent in a dark navy blue police uniform, stepped back. The sight of his badge riveted her attention. Sweat coated her forehead.

"In Texas, southwest of San Antonio."

Texas? Did she live here? Maybe someone knew her, had come forward to identify her after all. "Who am I?"

The corner of his mouth hiked into a lopsided grin. "That, ma'am, is one of the questions I'm here to ask you."

"One?" Again she stared at the badge for a long moment before she lifted her gaze to take in his face. For a few seconds, she lingered on his mouth curved in that smile. She tore her attention from his lips and tracked upward until she connected with his dark brown eyes. "You don't know who I am, then?" She'd hoped that was why he was there.

"No, ma'am. When we apprehended you, you didn't have any ID on you. At the time you kept babbling you didn't know your name."

"I still don't," she whispered more to herself, but he heard her.

"We ran your fingerprints, but there wasn't a match in the database. And from our inquiries around Sagebrush, no one knows you here…and you weren't reported missing."

She moved into her hospital room. Aware of its suddenly small dimensions, she kept herself near the door to the corridor. "You said you apprehended me. Am I under arrest?" As she asked that question, she couldn't believe she would be. It didn't feel right—in her gut. She couldn't be a criminal, could she?

"As far as we know, you have done nothing wrong, but we found you in the Lost Woods running from someone or something. You couldn't tell us anything about that. You were scared, had a nasty gash on your head, cuts and bruises all over you. You lost consciousness shortly after I found you. Do you remember anything about that?"

She took in his features—short, sandy-brown hair, piercing dark eyes with long lashes, a dimple in his left cheek when he smiled. A vague memory tugged at her. His face looming over her. "Did you chase me?" Behind her eyes a hammering sensation grew as if the stress of trying to remember was taking its toll on her.

"When you saw me, you ran, and I went after you."

"Why did you chase me?" she asked.

"We believe you might be a witness to a crime that occurred in the Lost Woods."

"I am?" Trying to think overloaded her mind, a blank one with only shadowy figures wavering, never staying long enough for her to really see them.

"We were looking for a seven-year-old, Brady Billows, who went missing."

"I don't know him. Did you find him?" The thought of a child in danger pushed all her problems into the background.

"Yes, he's safely home with his mother now. That ended well."

"That's good," she said with a sigh.

Exhaustion spread through her the longer she stood. The officer was between her and the bed. But if she didn't sit down soon, she would collapse. She moved to the side, intending to skirt around him, when his cell phone rang.

He answered. "Calloway here." His calm expression evolved into a frown that grooved lines into his forehead. "I'm on my way. I'll meet you there." He returned his cell to his pocket. "Sorry, there's been a development in the Lost Woods. I'll come back later."

She flattened herself against the wall to allow him to pass her in the short hallway to the door. "A development? What?"

"Nothing you need to be worried about," he said, and left the room.

Then why was she worried?

Lee Calloway drove toward the west end of the Lost Woods where the patrol officer and witness were waiting. From what the dispatcher had told him, there might be another crime committed in the woods on the outskirts of Sagebrush.

The same area where he found the woman in the hospital room several weeks ago, running as though someone was after her. As far as the police were concerned she was a Jane Doe. What had happened to her? Why was she running in the woods? Who was she running from? Did she know anything about the boy's kidnapping?

He didn't like mysteries. Probably why he became a cop in the first place. He was always trying to get to the bottom of things. Would he be able to with this beautiful, mysterious woman or would she remain an enigma? The doctor had said she could have amnesia when she woke up, and that certainly seemed to be the case. She might recover all her memory or part of it, but some people never did.

Had her head injury been the sole reason she couldn't remember, or was it more than that? Some kind of psychological or physical trauma beyond the obvious wound she had sustained? The coma she slipped into was caused by the head injury, according to the doctor. But how and why did she receive it? Still no answer to that question.

Lee parked near the trailhead into the Lost Woods where the police officer and a young man dressed in a jogging suit waited. When Lee climbed from his SUV, he went to the back and lifted the door. Kip, his black-and-white border collie who worked as a cadaver dog, sat with his tail sweeping back and forth.

Lee rubbed him behind his ears, one of his favorite places to be scratched. "You ready to work?"

Kip barked.

Lee hooked the leash to his dog's halter. "Then let's go."

Kip jumped from the back of the vehicle and trotted next to Lee as he covered the distance to the patrol officer.

"What do we have here?" Lee asked, assessing the young man who kept darting glances toward...

I truly enjoyed this book. The mystery unfolds slowly keeping you enthralled with the book. The book is one of a series so getting the other books helps you to understand how the search started but you can pick up on it later in the book. The twist at the end does add to the reason she doesn't want to remember what happened. It keeps you reading and enjoying the book all the way to the end. The rescue dogs adds great interest in the story and even people who don't care for dogs will enjoy the interaction of dog and partner. A must read.

Who is she, and what does she really know?
By Barbara L. Lemaster
Another entry in the Texas K-9 series, this book finds Sagebrush cop Lee Calloway protecting a woman named "Heidi" who has amnesia from someone who may be trying to kill her. Amnesia is such a tired trope in romance novels, but here Heidi's problem drives the plot: Lee believes that Heidi may know who's behind the organized crime family that has set up shop in Sagebrush. There's more suspense than romance here, but it's a simple, fun read.

Great sequel to book #1
By lighthouse88
A woman awakes and can remember nothing, her past, her name or where she lived or if she even lived in the Sagebrush community. Now, with the help of a local K-9 officer, “Heidi” is attempting to fill in the void of her memories. With a budding romance, “Heidi” is falling for Officer Lee and his dog. Some of her life feels right while some of it doesn’t. When she begins to remember, her life is in mortal danger. Though “Heidi” doesn’t know what her real name is, she is sure about at least one thing…she is in love. Her desire to learn her real identity becomes paramount if she is ever to have a future and a family.
The characters introduced to the audience began with Tracking Justice written by Shirlee McCoy and they follow into book two written by Margaret Daley. Not all of the mystery surrounding the latest happenings in the woods area is solved, especially when no one knows the identity of a local crime syndicate boss. More bodies are found and no one is talking due to the fear of The Boss.
I had read another series by Margaret Daley involving the state of Texas and law enforcement. The stories are compelling as the author brings life to her characters by the way she describes them as well as the story or action taking place. So, when I picked up the second book in the K-9 series and saw who the author was, I had no doubt I wouldn’t be able to put it down until I had finished. I didn’t either!
Now I will delve into book three of the K-9 series titled, Guard Duty. I hope you join in reading the series as they ignite the imagination and spur the heart’s action!

Review
'How do the networks, which we increasingly rely upon in our everyday life, actually work? This book is an inspiring romp through the big ideas in networking, which is immediately rewarding and will motivate later courses.' - Frank Kelly, Professor of the Mathematics of Systems, Master of Christ's College, University of Cambridge, UK

"We are entering a new Internet era -- the era of the likes of Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Facebook with entirely new types of problems. This book captures the new era, taking a fresh approach to both topic coverage and pedagogic style. Often at the end a section it leaves the reader asking questions; then exactly those questions are answered in the subsequent section. Every university should offer a course based on this book. It could be taught out of both ECE or CS departments at the undergraduate or graduate levels." - Keith Ross, Leonard J. Shustek Chair Professor in Computer Science, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, US, Co-author of "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach"

"Mung Chiang's Networked Life has an intriguing premise and an ambitious vision...Chiang's framing of the material as 20 intriguing questions about networks, their architectures, and associated phenomena ties theory to practical systems that students encounter every day...Chiang's course surely pushes the boundaries of the traditional lecture, and the book similarly is meant to be a next-generation work." - Lynn Andrea Stein, Science

"Chiang takes a fresh new look at the networking discipline and addresses many of the issues that have arisen during the spread of networks such as the web and Facebook. Half of the book treats the network as a graph and explores many of its features in a graph-theoretic way. The author does not intend to replace traditional networking books, but wants to enhance them in a way that encompasses the new discipline of network science...Chiang manages to avoid information overload by using examples from well-known real-world services and technologies, making it easy to relate theory to practice. The book could be used in advanced undergraduate courses or in a post-graduate course on networking...I particularly liked the exercises in each chapter, and the fact that the book only references a handful of the most significant bibliographic entries at the end of each chapter...Overall, the book is unique in that it masterfully combines the networking and network science disciplines in a single volume." - Dimitrios Katsaros, Computing Reviews, June 2013

"...an engaging undergraduate textbook that explains the foundations of many of the networks that now are part of our daily routine...The author organizes the material in the Socratic style, using practical questions instead of the more common (dry) survey of concepts and techniques. It provides just enough information to whet the reader's appetite and spur interest in networks..." - Fernando Berzal, Computing Reviews, July 2013

NOT for the Casual Reader
By PHL1111
This is a tough book to review. On the one hand I want to give it one star and on the other hand I want to give it five stars. Let me explain. The problem is the way that the book is being marketed. In part the description for the book on Amazon states, "How does Netflix recommend movies and Amazon rank products?... Driven by twenty real-world questions about our networked lives, this book explores the technology behind the multi-trillion dollar Internet and wireless industries. Providing easily
understandable answers for the casually curious... for network industry professionals and anyone curious about how technological and social networks really work."

Being "casually curious" I ordered the book and was expecting something along the lines of Freakonomics or Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point or Outliers, etc. Something that a reasonably intelligent person could understand without being a mathematician or engineer. But that's not what I got and that's not what the book is. The book is a textbook complete with homework assignments.

An example: Most people have heard of "Six Degrees of Separation" and maybe even seen the movie where the idea was prominent, or played around with the six degress of Kevin Bacon or Brad Pitt websites - now that's casual. The author explores this topic in Chapter 9 entitled "Can I really reach anyone in six steps?" and gives what he calls first a short answer to this question (as he does the other 19 questions in the book in each of their respective chapters) but even those short answers are formal and not at all casual. A portion of the short answer from this chapter reads: "That concerned only with the existence of short paths from local information. As we will see, it is also more difficult to create a robust explanation for the observation of an algorithmic small world." Which leads to the next section where a long answer is spelled out and concludes with the homework. A portion of the homework for this chapter reads, "Now, your task for this homework problem is simple: For K = 3 there are two distinct de Bruijn sequences. What do we mean by "distinct sequences"? Sequence 01011 and 00111 are distinct, but sequences 01001 and 10101 are not (try to write out the sequences as in Figure 9.16). Draw two distinct Eulerian cycles on the graph in 9.17 and report the two distinct de Bruijn sequences found."

The author appears to really know his subject and to the expert and serious student in the field this is probably a five star book. But to the casual albeit intelligent reader this is a complex technical doctrine and one star. To bill the book anything less than technical textbook and say it's also for the casual reader does the book an injustice although it might increase sales.

So an average of 3 stars.

Does Google rule the world?
By Tony
In his new book Networked Life, award-winning Princeton professor of Electrical Engineering Mung Chiang gives 20 questions and answers about how Google, Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter and many other networks shape and control our everyday life.

I came to know about the book through Coursera, where Mung Chiang's course Networks: Friends, Money, and Bytes caught my eye. I was especially intrigued by the question: How does Google rank webpages? Like so many others I was worried that Google's dominant position on the Internet, could one day lead to thought control and censorship of everything that was not in their interest. After reading Networked Life this fear has been put to rest.

I got a lot more than I bargained for. Networked life is not just about Google. It's about every major player on the internet, how they have evolved with a strong emphasis on how they did it. Each chapter or question is constructed using the same easy to follow template: The question is asked, the relevancy is explored, the answer is provided in short form, then in greater detail showing what really is done and how you could do the same.

Despite the complexity of the subject, Networked Life is an astonishingly easy and well written read. Even when Mung dives head first into complicated mathematical modeling to explain what is going on, his line of thought is easy to understand.

An equally good read for the casual reader that would like to understand the world we live in a little better and for the advanced reader that would like to understand exactly how big networks do it.

Networked Life will deepen your knowledge about the many successful networks of this world and maybe help you invent the next Google.

This is an excellent introduction into the world of online networking and the answer to questions we all want to know ...
By Deb
One of the most interesting things about networking, not in the computer sense, is that courses like Professor Mung Chiang's are now available to all comers. Coursera has networked and provided free online courses to "empower people with education that has so far been available only to a select few." Would you enjoy taking a course that has been available only to students of engineering at Princeton? I've tried MIT courseware and have enjoyed being in the classroom and I look at this textbook and the course with wonder. This course, "Networks: Friends, Money, and Bytes," does have a prerequisite. You should be well-versed in basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus. There are mathematical models in this book that are utilized when Chiang gives us the "long answer."

The "network" in this book refers to the networks we have created in our online world. This world is almost inescapable, something that links us to large numbers of people in the world. Chiang has posited twenty questions for us to think about and explore. He answers them for us in both a long and short manner. One of these questions asks, "Can I really reach anyone in six steps?" The six degrees of separation theory reminds all of us of Kevin Bacon, but just how realistic is this small world premise? Chiang revisits Stanley Milgram's experiment in his short answer. The social networking phenomenon is fascinating to all of us. Haven't we all exclaimed at one time or another, "It's a small world!"

Is the six degrees of separation theory simply an urban legend? You can work right along with Chiang as he works through the Watts-Strogatz model in his "long answer." At the end of the chapter, as in all of his questions, you'll find a summary along with additional problems and additional book resources to explore. Perhaps there are a lot of questions you'd like answered, but the most fascinating part of this book is that you can explore them at your leisure. Have you asked yourself "When can I trust an average rating on Amazon?" Which ones do you trust and how do you know when not to trust them? This book is a journey into networking and a fun one at that, whether or not you are interested in the coursework. Keep in mind that the long answers do entail mathematical models and to get the most enjoyment out of the material you do need to have basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus behind you. This is an excellent introduction into the world of online networking and the answer to questions we all want to know.

Still Relevant After 40 Years
By Eric Maroney
Notes of A Native Son, a series of essays written by James Baldwin in the late 40's and early 50s, still has many relevant things to say about the topics it covers, mainly race in America, nearly forty years after its publication. Baldwin takes on many subjects: he bites the hand of his former mentor, Richard Wright (in some old fashioned younger writer states why he is free from his older counselor style) in "Everybody's Protest Novel." Baldwin fights for the writer's right to create not from any political or social agenda, but merely for art's sake. But he also has trenchant and pointed things to say about race in American, and about white/black relations in general. In the concluding essay, "Stranger in the Village" he writes of the experience of being the first person of Africa descent to visit a small Swiss village. The prose is insightful and bold; the observations cutting and remorseless. Notes of A Native Son fully deserves its place in the pantheon of contemporary American classics.

A Personally Seminal Collection of Essays
By NRL
The title essay in Baldwin's important collection has been one of those pieces of writing that has been personally important throughout my personal and professional life. Baldwin combines his first experiences of racism with his memories of his strained relationship to his bitter father. The encounter with racism in a New Jersey restaurant where he is refused service leads Baldwin to a better understanding of his father's pain and his attempts to overcome his own.

The essay is beautifully written, artfully combining and complicating the different themes. I've used it regularly in my teaching, and regard it as one of the best pieces of twentieth-century American prose. While I'm not African American, the writing allows me at least partly to enter Baldwin's feelings about race. Equally moving for me, and I suspect for many readers, is the description of Baldwin's strained relationship to and eventual compassion for his father, and his attempts to overcome his own frustration and anger. This deeply honest and articulate essay and book is a must for anyone concerned with modern American writing and also seeking a deeper understanding of his or her own inner complexities.
