A childhood favorite

This book was one of my favorites as a child and now I love reading it to my son. Mike and Maryanne really show that if you value your things and take care of them they last longer and work harder for you. Now if we could only convince Apple to stop making software updates that render the hardware useless after a year and a half we'll be all set.

Classic Story, Warm, Active Pictures

The cover of this book is the same as my old, dog-eared copy from my childhood 30 years ago. A Caldecott Award winner, the pictures drive the tale as much as the plot. An excellent book from cover-to-cover.

Re-reading it now brings back great memories and fascination of how Mike Mulligan and his beloved steam shovel worked hard to accomplish a fantastic task. Whenever people watched them dig, they always worked a little better and a little faster.

Although it is somewhat dated, and even has Mike smoking at the end (you'd never see a responsible publisher do that today), it holds on to five stars.

A modern John Henry, Mike faces the challenge of new technology. Undaunted, like the famous hammer-driving tall tale hero, he struggles to meet the task. Can he dig a hole faster than the new machine? Can he and his mighty red-metal friend do it by the end of the day?

A great story of perseverence and hard work, I fully recommend "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel." Place it on your shelf next to "Make Way for Ducklings" and "Where the Wild Things Are."

The book was great, it was intended for a 4-year-old grandson who likes big machines. The reason for only three stars is that the book was supposed to have a CD with it of the book read by Matthew Broderick, and the CD was missing.

At its core, this book has a message, but it might be obscured by the inability to separate the comedic intentions from the title and the heavy-handed cultural satire.

A Different Perspective

Summary: Tristan White is the devastatingly handsome, 32-year-old CEO of White Enterprises. He comes from a long line of wealth and he lives the life of a "One-Percenter" on the Gold Coast of Chicago. He is born into a world of white privilege and is used to controlling every aspect of his life. Keisha Beale is a "ghetto girl," two years out of university, who is starting a business venture, needs capital, and takes the place of her more business-savvy partner in a meeting with Tristan White himself. She's a black American woman from the south side of Chicago, with a troubled past. She has been so focused on her secular pursuits that her love life has been put on the back burner. As you can probably surmise from the title, when their worlds collide, sparks fly, and a fever is ignited in both of them that they have never felt before. It turns out that Tristan has some secrets of his own and once Keisha agrees to enter into his world, they both discover passions that they never knew they had.

Review: This story is obviously an homage to E.L. James', Fifty Shades of Gray, which I have also read. Both stories are about forbidden love. In this particular case, the taboos are their interracial romance, their class differences, and the intermingling of business with pleasure. Adding to that, Tristan introduces Keisha to the world of BDSM where the words "master" and "slave" take on a whole new meaning when a white man is weilding that kind of control over a black woman in America. This changes the whole dynamic of the story it is based on in a very insightful, humorous, and sensitive way.

I would highly recommend this read. Erotica and kinky sex is a big taboo in the black American community. We are still a very conservative lot, as a whole. With the popularity of erotica aimed towards African-American readers, from authors such as Zane and Eric Jerome Dickey, it seems that bubbling under the surface of our "going to church on Sunday" facades and real fears about the rise of STDs, particularly AIDS/HIV, is a desire to explore every aspect of our sexuality in a safe way. This is the first part of a four-part fantasy that allows the reader to do just that.

I think you'll enjoy the story, no matter your race/ethnicity or gender. It's well-written and the characters are very likable. L.V. Lewis is one to watch. There are some stereotypical characters in the story, but I get the impression that the author was trying to get across that we all have preconceived notions about each other that are eliminated once we get to know the individual.

Way To Do It Better...Bravo!

First and foremost, I haven't been moved to do a customer review in a lot time, so this is saying something. Anyway, I was hunting around amazon looking for something to read. The funny thing is, I'd been looking up reviews to see if others shared my frustration with the Fifty Shades of Grey series. The characters, their chemistry, their...everything, just didn't do it for me and I couldn't even finish the last in the trilogy. Let me say, I've been tired of the same old same old in the romance genre for a long time. There just isn't enough diversity in contemorary romance for me, and it's annoying. We claim to be progressive yet still our movies and books still largely depict that the only people capable of finding true love is two Caucasian people. That irks me. So, I almost exclusively read interracial romance because it's near and dear to my heart.

Boy, am I happy I found this book. It fixed everything that was wrong with Fifty Shades. Tristan and Keisha have tons of chemistry. I wasn't annoyed once by her Triple-G or Fairy Hoochie Mama. They were hilarious and added to the story, not detracted. I'm even curious about his brother and Jada. If you ask me, this book should be a best seller. Keisha wasn't some pathetic, unbelievable innocent, whiny character. She had a mouth and a back bone. That's a heroine I can get on board with. I'm am very much looking forward to the next book. I will be recommending this book to any and everyone I can.

Is this a spoof/parody?

I'm not sure if this book is supposed to be a spoof or parody of 50 Shades of Grey. If so it FAILED. Not surprising since 50 Shades of Grey FAILED as well. But I digress...

What really irritated about this book besides the head hopping, bad grammar/editing and terrible story line is the "ghetto" heroine. I can't stand books that highlight African American women the way that this author did. Unfortunately, there is enough of this stereotypical behavior that we have to put up with in real life. I don't want to read about it in a book, especially a romance/erotic romance book. That's another genre for those types of characters. There was so much profanity and slang used that I found myself wanting to roll my eyes and neck while placing a fist on a stuck out hip.

Seriously, this was ridiculous and a turn off. I see a LOT of 4 and 5 star reviews so I thought this book would be worth purchasing. I truly regret that I did. I will NOT be finishing this book and I do plan to request a refund.

About the Author
Robert Southwell, SJ, was an English Jesuit priest and poet who lived from 1561–1595, when he was hanged at Tyburn. Peter Davidson is a professor of Renaissance Studies at the University of Aberdeen and the editor of The Clarendon Anthology of Seventeenth Century English Poetry, The Clarendon Poems and Translations of Sir Richard Fanshawe, and Poetry and Revolution. Anne Sweeney is the author of a published monograph on Southwell, Snow in Arcadia: Redrawing the English Lyric Landscape.

Great for Children, Fantastic for Adults

My dad was dying and I bought several books to take to him at the hospital. This was one of them. When I flew down to see him, the word was that he still had hope. Within thirty minutes of my arrival, we found it not to be true. I still read him this book, just as he used to read it to me. It was a joke for us during his last days. Even when he had break through pain and I wasn't allowed to give him more medicine, we'd read this and he'd squeeze my hand while he tried to get through just a little more time. Sometimes he told me the story to keep his mind focussed.

Before he died he told me to finish my degree. I told him it would be hard because I have a big family, so much going on-- and he smiled and said, "Let me tell you about a train that couldn't get over a mountain. It had great things on it, toys for the good boys and girls, milk for their dinners. It was hard to get this train loaded with good things over the mountain but there was one little engine. . ." Three months later I am in college and this little engine goes through my mind a lot. The story is one of my children's favorites and they don't know why I can't read it without crying!

This book appeals to everyone for different reasons, but the results are the same. An iron will allows us to overcome any obstacle!

This is the first time that the 'Little Engine' has been published as a deluxe picture book. For this reason alone, it is unfair to compare it to the previous editions. The older editions are illustrated with small, simple, colored line drawings rather than lavish, full-page, full-color paintings.

Long's illustrations are beautiful and, in my opinion, suit the story better than the old ones did. As I child, I was never quite sure if the clown and dolls were toys or people. Long's illustration makes them obviously toys.

Long's illustrations give the different locomotives distinct looks and personalities. The original illustrations for both previous editions of the book have locomotives that are virtually identical, except for being different colors. The passenger engine in Long's illustration is a sleek, streamlined design with an arrogant, sneering expression, while the freight engine is a massive, dark iron, whale-like machine that looms over and peers down at the tiny clown.

It's unfortunate that the review from the School Library Journal was chosen by Amazon for the Editorial Reviews, above. I'd like to correct some errors - the writer has her facts wrong about the history of this book.

What Burg believes to be the original edition of the book is, in fact, the 1954 edition with illustrations by George and Doris Hauman. Although Burg praises the '1930s' look of these illustrations with the green poka-dotted clown, they scream '1950s!'. While most people today are familiar with this version, I think the older illustrations are showing their age, and I believe children today will relate better to Long's paintings. Also, as I have stated above, I believe Long's illustrations help tell the story better.

The actual 1930s illustrations were colored line drawings by Lois Lenski, and few people today will have seen them. Interestingly, those illustrations show the story taking place in a stark, snow-covered winter landscape.

Burg claims Loren Long's paintings have a '1950s' look. Anyone familiar with painting styles of the 1930s will recognize the influence of painters like Grant Wood on Long's style. Long's illustrations are much truer to the 1930s than the 1954 illustrations are.

I am a friend of Loren Long's, and I know how hard he worked on these illustrations and how much this book meant to him. These paintings were a labor of love.

Where's the rest of the story?

This will teach me not to read the reviews carefully before purchase. This is a very abridged version of the classic story: the bright shiny engine and the big strong engine are nowhere to be found. If you're after the book you remember from your childhood, find another version. The illustrations are bright & fun, but there's just too much missing from the story.

Too long for very young children

My pet peeve among children's books is when they are too darn LONG. It takes forever to read this one aloud as it is written, and my 4-year-old gets pretty bored. (Of course, your four-year-old's mileage may vary.) I usually make up a short, one or two sentence synopsis for each page, and "read" that instead of the long paragraph.
Also the illustrations are just, well, funky-looking. They've got a strange, hard-edge, shadowy look that's nothing like the movie. The writers would have done a lot better to stick to movie cels, or else lighter, brighter caricatures.
This one ended up in the "hardly ever read it" pile.

A Great Monster Story!

Monsters Inc. is about monsters trying to scare every child in the human world. The monsters go through doors to each child’s closet door. They scare the children and collect the children’s screams for energy to run the monster world. All the monsters are afraid of the children because they think they are toxic. Everything goes wrong when a little girl named Boo gets out of the human world. Sulley and Mike are best friends. At first they are afraid of Boo, but Sulley becomes like a kitty to Boo. Sulley and Mike help each other to get Boo out of the monster world. I liked the book when Boo sneezed on Mike. Then Mike sprayed disinfectant spray in his eye when was going spray it on his arm. After he sprayed his eye he covered his eye, stomped his foot and he screamed “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I also liked it when Mike and Sulley went through the door and wound up in the long corridor passageway. They wound up on a mountain where it was snowing up above were they live. The book was so good that I want to see the movie right away. I want my family to be the first three people in the theater!

Not exactly what I expected...

I haven’t decided if I liked this or not. Monica has a unique ability that does add a special twist to the story, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. From a romance/erotica standpoint Owen used it to show her how he felt about her and in the end so did Alec. The three even learned to maneuver around her ability to allow them to be together without restraint. From the standpoint of the ‘who did it?’ it got a little weird. Touching things, seeing things, it could be a little disturbing at times.

As for the plot…I enjoyed the relationship between Monica, Owen, and Alec. They basically forced her to open herself up to the possibility of them, but it was all good. Now the mystery/suspense part that was entwined within the romance was too downplayed for my liking.

If you like reading about sex (M/M, M/F/M, M/M/F) then this will hit the spot for you, but don’t expect too much of anything else because if you do you’ll be sadly disappointed.

“I’d like to see more of what I saw earlier. I’d like to watch you two together.”

Alec caught Owen’s glance. Owen simmered with the dark sexuality and his eyes flickered, interest flaring in them. This was a first. They’d never shared a woman who actually asked to see them together before.

I had an idea of what to expect with this book simply because of the blurb, but I still felt a bit disappointed because I wasn’t aware that it was going to be as smutty as it was. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good smut read as much as the next person, but I was more thinking this was going to be a suspenseful story.

On that note, I do think that Ms. Walker did a good job at including the suspense into the story so that it didn’t feel too overrun with smuttiness. I thought that the characters were very interesting, and the powers that Monica had were quite awesome if I do say so! I think that the balance between the already established relationship between Owen and Alec, and the addition of Monica was done very well. I was worried that it was going to seem as though the triad was going to seem forced, but that wasn’t the case with this group.

I did enjoy the story even though it wasn’t what I expected, and I am pretty sure that I would read the other books in the series in the future.

Love scenes strong point, plot a bit shallow.

Overall it was a good book. You could tell the author's strong points were the "love scenes", as the actual plot didn't
go into great detail, and it didn't get very deep. I view this story on two levels- one being the plot, the other being
the love scenes. The plot's culmination was a bit of a disappointment, but the love scenes were worth reading the plot
for. But isn't that what you really read those books for in the first place? The love scenes were very well written,
and they stayed classy, which can be difficult. I look forward to reading the next two novels in the series and see how
they all tie toegether as I am curious about the other two sisters and more details about them and their talents.
