It all starts when Southern Belle Lollie Woolfolk sashays into Rick Shannon’s office at Rockin’ Vestigations in Vicksburg. She hires him to find the grandfather she never met, one-time blues producer Tucker Woolfolk. The day after Rick finds him, the old man is murdered. A couple of days later, Tucker Woolfolk’s former partner is killed too. Then Lollie Woolfolk disappears.
Things start to get weird when another woman claiming to be Lollie Woolfolk shows up and hires him to find out who killed the two men and why. Rick’s investigation turns up evidence pointing to the legendary Blind, Crippled, and Crazy sessions, a fabled blues recording date featuring Blind Buddy Cotton, Crippled Willie Jefferson, and Crazy Earl Tate. Blues scholars have been searching for these tapes for fifty years. But no one has ever killed for them. Until now.
Rick and Lollie soon find themselves looking back half a century to solve the case and it takes them up famed Highway 61 to places rich in the history of the blues.
A place where, for the past fifty years, certain people have worked very hard to keep the lid on some unsavory business. But when Pigfoot Morgan gets released from Parchman Farm half a century after going in, all hell breaks loose, threatening the fortunes of three old bluesmen and four generations of a Delta cotton dynasty.

Some fine characterization helps offset an overly complicated plot in Fitzhugh's second mystery to star veteran disc jockey and rookie PI Rick Shannon (after 2004's Radio Activity). Now working at a radio station in Vicksburg, Miss. (and more into old blues than rock), Rick also heads Rockin'Vestigations, to which an attractive young woman who calls herself Lollie Woolfolk applies for help in finding her missing grandfather, Tucker Woolfolk, an old-time record producer. When Rick discovers Tucker dead, he has a murder case on his hands. Then Lollie disappears, and another gal claiming to be Lollie Woolfolk turns up. The eccentric, mostly elderly cast includes the members of the blues group BCC (short for Blind, Crippled and Crazy); a pill-crazy killer; a crooked, prejudiced and big-bellied white sheriff; and an innocent black man released from jail after doing 50 years for murder and ready for revenge. Providing comic relief is a sickly alley cat Rick befriends. A search for the old tape of a legendary blues session by BCC generates some suspense, even if its fate remains unclear. This is the second outing for rock DJ and amateur investigator Rick Shannon, following Radio Activity [BKL Mr 1 04]. This time Rick is hired to track down two elderly former radio-station owners, but they are both murdered within days of Rick's locating them. He soon discovers that valuable tapes of a legendary blues recording dubbed the Blind, Crippled, and Crazy session, long the subject of rumor, are, in fact, real and may be the object of the killer's murderous quest. In addition, he falls hard for client and martial-arts expert Lollie Woolfolk, and their light and witty banter is one of the novel's high points. Fitzhugh also has a field day parading his in-depth knowledge of the blues, its many colorful practitioners, and its storied past. He is less successful with a lame running gag about Rick's ailing pet and his many grand pronouncements about racism in the music industry. Still, for fans of Ace Atkins' Crossroad Blues (1998), also about the discovery of lost blues recordings, this one plays nicely. Joanne Wilkinson

Clever, hysterical, and historical

Historical only when the main character is discussing rock and roll or the blues. Otherwise this is funny fiction with a good mystery. Bill has stepped up a notch in that the content is more fluid than his first books. Not that I'm not eager to read them all again, I am.

Great for those who like cynical humor, fun reading.

Can't understand why Barnes and Noble never has this book in stock. It's really enjoyable to read, really funny scenes, and us yankees can even learn something about music and Mississippi. Sort of like getting a favorite uncle 1/2 drunk and telling stories, except a lot more fun.
