Pleasure is as fragile as glass... Spain, March 1939 - the Spanish Civil War is coming to an end. Five young Republicans in the small town of Cuenca know they are on the losing side of the war. History only recognises the winners, and the group know they could die, all destined to become faceless statistics. They concoct a plan to go to Valencia in search of safety, but not all of these young men and women are going to survive? Seventy years later, bicycle mechanic Luna Montgomery, the granddaughter of a New Zealand nurse who served during the Spanish Civil War, has made Spain her home. A young widow and mother of two little boys, Luna wants to know what became of her Spanish grandfather. He is one of the 'disappeared', one of the hundreds of thousands of Spaniards who were murdered and hidden away during and after the war. On a quick trip to Madrid, Luna forms an unlikely friendship with an intelligent and popular bullfighter, Cayetano Beltran, but as Luna presses on to delve into Spain's history for answers, Cayetano struggles with truths he wished he had never found out. In an ever-changing society that respects and upholds family ties, betrayal by the people that Luna and Cayetano hold dear will hurt them more than they could have realised. There are old wounds that have yet to heal underneath Spain's 'pact of forgetting'.

About the Author
CAROLINE ANGUS BAKER is a New Zealand author. A trained sailmaker, Caroline has gone from long hours behind sewing machines, to competing in national sailing competitions, to attending international sailing regattas. She has cycled down Hawaiian volcanoes, been served dinner by billionaires, bumped into supermodels and movie stars, fumbled to find the right words on Italian live television, walked the red carpet at fashion events, fought off Moroccan muggers, soaked up a Norwegian Christmas, watched whales in Canada, slept on the floor in Dubai, played in the German snow, partied on the Great Barrier Reef, got lost in London, passed out in Thailand and dodged bushfires in Australia. A Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Italian culture and years of keeping a diary of life in Spain later, Caroline returned to New Zealand, and began to write all she had seen and heard. After a Diploma in Business, and thousands of hours studying the Spanish civil war, Spanish and bullfighting history, it became Caroline's time to turn to fiction. From growing up humble in small town New Zealand to travelling the world, she now lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband and four young sons. Another adventure could be just around the corner.

Absorbing!
By Debbie Jenkins NativeSpain
An absorbing book, full of twists and turns to keep your interest throughout. It's well-paced with reveals, surprises and coincidences. I know very little about the civil war, this book gave me a small peak into the personal tragedies and difficulties faced by people living through it. The author shows us the day to day lives of real people, with challenging conflicts to consider - loyalties and loves, families and friendships, convolutions and far reaching consequences. She paints lovely portraits of the people and the cities and brings the book to life. Flipping between the life and death decisions of the the 1930s and the relatively easy choices the characters need to make in the 2000s gives the book depth and perspective.

"my heart can wait on a maybe"
By sljk
Blood In The Valencian Soil is an excellent historical book on history & war, how it affects people and how it intricately molds their lives..... the lives of innocent and not-so-innocent people, living and dead, during and long after The Spanish Civil War. When Cayetano and Luna meet, Cayetano is very charming; polite yet determined. He is a stranger yet Luna decides to meet him for midnight supper......sealing their destiny. I love reading about history and the way life was. The families are fictional but become real as you travel and live among them.
Mysteries, intriguing characters , the horrific crimes and realities of The Spanish Civil War compel you to feel their pain and suffering. Several times I had to stop reading; I can't see to read for my tears......the truth is so sad.
Feelings are challenged and fates decided.
There is no need for translations because Caroline incorporates Spanish into English making reading much more pleasant.
Blood In The Valencian Soil is the first in a series....thankfully♥ there will be more!
I am anxiously waiting for Caroline's next book.......

Unforgetable read
By Cynthia Shepherd
Having read Carolines previous book I was looking forward to "Blood in the Valencian Soil", I was not disappointed I throughly enjoyed the read.
I was not familiar with stories of the Spanish Cival War but I found it most interesting. I found the characters intriguing and the twists and turns were also very appealling.
It was a fight for love and happiness from the onset and I for one was so happy it all ended well.
"Blood in the Valencian Soil" is a book I can highly recommend, it was a book I never wanted to end.
Looking forward to Carolines next book as I know it will be another excellent read....
