Constantine of the Roman Empire

This book is not only about Constantine but also about a critical period in the life of the Roman Empire around 300 AD. It was a time of great battles and fierce competition among the Roman emperors. One of the social issues of the time was the rise of Christianity and its challenge of paganism which was official state religion. Extremists on the pagan side (Galerius,Maximin) called for the burning of all Christians as they considered them a serious threat to the Empire. Diocletian, the dominant emperor, initially called for tolerance but changed course due to the uncompromising attitude of the Christians. The result was a full-scale attack on Christianity including discrimination, imprisonment and even torture.
This horrible situation which took the lives of so many Christians did not ease up until the coming of the new emperor Constantine who invaded Italy and entered Rome with a large army. Unlike his predecessor, Diocletian, Constantine gradually introduced kinder and more tolerant regulations. What helped was that Christianity appealed to him. In fact he claimed that the Cross appeared to him up in the sky and even he saw Christ's figure standing next to his bed. From there on he made a firm and concerted effort to ease the burden of the Christian community, all of which led to the Edict of Milan in 313 AD which gave people the freedom of choosing their religion, and ultimately to the famous Nicea conference where he affirmed the legitimacy of Christianity. With this problem behind him Constantine, together with his mother Helen, embarked on an ambitious development program building churches and Christian institutions all over the Empire. He was so generous he was accused of extravagance and even wasting the Empire's funds.
Once the reader gets familiar with the big names (Diocletian, Licinius,Usebius,Athanasius,Zosimus...) he will find this book not only entertaining but historically very informative...Unfortunately, there is one troubling side issue: the excessive use of violence in a calm and almost acceptable way. We read with alarm how when Licinius defeated Maximin in a major battle he went back and butchered Maximin's entire innocent family. Worse still, we are amazed that Constantine, the so called Champion of Christianity found the emotional stamina to kill his own high ranked and popular son, and then proceed also to kill his own wife. Apparently, the principles of Christianity were not well understood or perhaps were not taken too seriously.

It was an informative book, but seemed to drone on somewhat. I also felt there was too much background on persons & events not directly related. I was looking for more of a fact based biography.
