Close To Home (Westen Series, Book 1), by Suzanne Ferrell

“Welcome to Westen. I’m Lorna Doone. Yep, spelled just like the cookie and I own the Peaches ‘N Cream Café here in Westen. You might think nothing much happens in a small mid-western town, but as my friend Harriett says, things aren’t always what they appear. Take our girl Emma for example…”

Emma Lewis has a lot on her plate. The single mother of two precocious twin boys and an aging mother who is having trouble getting through each day, the last thing Emma needs is a man in her life, especially a doctor. So when the town’s doctor goes on vacation and his handsome nephew takes over, Emma is shocked to not only find him standing in her bedroom, but accusing her of being a neglectful parent.

Clint Preston came to Westen for the year to fill in as the town doc while his uncle took a long needed vacation. Clint also needed a sense of peace and calm to try to find his passion for medicine burned out by long shifts in an urban hospital’s ER. Angered to find two boys in his clinic with broken wrists and no accompanying parent, he is determined to confront their mother. The feisty redhead he meets quickly dispels his belief that she’s a neglectful mother, but he can see her situation is more critical than she wishes to face and finds himself volunteering to help care for her sons and the remodeling of her home.

As Emma and Clint forge a relationship among the slightly off-beat characters that inhabit Westen a menace from Emma’s past threatens her and her sons. Clint and Emma join forces to prevent the loss of either boy and the love they’ve discovered in each other’s’ arms.

Another GREAT read by Ms. Suzanne Ferrell!
By Kim
Having read Ms. Ferrell's books in the past (Kidnapped,Hunted,Surrender of Lacy Morgan), I was excited to see she had a new book out. While several of her other books were romantic suspense/thrillers, this book is a sweet little romance novel (with a bit of drama mixed in) that takes place in the town of Weston. Her main characters, Emma and Clint, are well developed and likeable. So many romance novels today are poorly written with very little character developement - I read them and feel no attachment to the main characters. But in this story, I felt like I got to know the characters and was routing for their happy ending. Plus, the small town of Weston and the supporting characters just add to the story. From what I know, this is the first book in a series about the town of Weston, and I can't wait to read the next! I LOVE SERIES BOOKS!

Don't waste your time.
By A.L.
I don't like writing poor reviews because I know that each book is the result of an author's work and creativity. But I can't help it with this one. Rather than being spunky, independent, and torn between her need for the hero and her desire to stand on her own two feet, she was whiny, annoying, and borderline bipolar. There were too many secondary characters who were poorly developed and they were entirely too gimmicky. As someone who grew up in a small town in the Midwest, I can also say that this portrayal of small town Ohio life is wildly inaccurate and that the speech patterns alternated between aw-shucks hicks and something one is more likely to hear south of the old Mason-Dixon line. We don't speak like that. The writing indicated that the author had little or no understanding of medicine, which was unfortunate since the hero was a doctor, and no understanding of the legal process. Since one the major storylines involves a legal battle, it weakened that development. The resolution was ridiculous, though perhaps that was just in keeping with the rest of the book. I found myself shaking my head throughout most of the story. I forced myself to finish the book because I knew pretty much right away that I was going to write a review and I wanted to make sure that I covered everything. My recommendation is that you avoid this book and take the time you would have spent reading it to find something more worthy of your attention.

Close To Home
By Alice
Emma Lewis is not your typical, small town, single mother. With mischievous six-year-old twin boys, two jobs, a mother on the verge of Alzheimer's, and nosey but good-hearted neighbors, the last thing she needs is the complication of a man. Or does she?

Dr. Clint Preston has one huge strike against him--he's a doctor and so was Emma's ex. Add to that his accuse-first-ask-questions-later attitude, he has a challenge getting past Emma's wall. But when fate--or the boys--bring them together, he can't resist Emma's strength and determination. But an unexpected twist at the end puts their whole future family in jeopardy.

Close To Home provides everything you'd want in a small town romance: quirky secondary characters, adorable twin boys, gorgeous hero, and a heroine you can root for and respect. This read warmed my heart, put tears in my eyes and a smile on my face.
